Books for Bubba from Flip for Joy + a Giveaway!

[Sponsored Review]

We participated in the Flip for Joy‘s Father’s Day contest in IG and won for ourselves a Mandarin book titled ‘爸爸的亲亲’ for Bubba. When I provided my details for Meiru from Flip for Joy to send us the prize, she asked if I would be keen in a blog review on some Chinese books to kick-start Bubba’s reading journey.

I said ‘Yes’ to that because I found it a struggle to look for Chinese books for Bubba. We tried to instil a routine for Bubba at night. After her shower, she would unwind with some playtime with my mil before I take her to our bedroom (yes, we co-sleep) and I read her a bedtime story. She would squeal when she sees me picking up her favourite stories to read to her.

The Man had been bugging me to get some Mandarin books for Bubba that he could read to her. He was adamant about introducing Mandarin to Bubba on the onset so that she could be effectively bilingual  at an early age. He knew my Mandarin was far from satisfactory so he didn’t want Bubba to follow suit.

As you can imagine, I obviously found it a struggle to purchase Mandarin storybooks for Bubba. I didn’t know where to start. I got a couple of mandarin flash cards and simple picture books off qoo10 but I knew those weren’t exactly storybook materials. And then I decided since Bubba had a couple of fave storybooks in English, I could get them in Mandarin versions. That way, it would be easy for her to relate. So I started to build Bubba’s small little Mandarin library of books from scratch with a couple of other reads from friends.

IMG_2435When Meiru said she would pick out some Mandarin books for Bubba, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. She asked if I could share with her what I had, which I did. Sent her a pic of the 4 miserly Mandarin books that we had.

IMG_2789When we received our package a couple of days later, I was really quite thrilled with the selection of books that Meiru has carefully curated for Bubba. Loved the handwritten note and the joyful reads that were largely made of stories with animals in it. Perfect for Bubba for she’s in an animal phase.

IMG_2797She certainly wasted no time and delved straight into her new reads. Her fave animal at the moment has gotta be the lion! She loves mimicking the roar of the lion and can animately point at the character when she sees a lion. It’s actually quite cute to watch her flip the pages of the book and babbling as if she knew what the story was about. I guess that’s where it’s crucial for us to sit next to her and read to her so that she understands how the story unfolds.

IMG_2790Our prize! 爸爸的亲亲 which the Man loves reading to Bubba, of course.

L1020010When he is not busy with work on weeknights, he does try to squeeze in some time to read her a book or two. We’ve been alternating between this book and 我的朋友上 which is this gorgeous pop-up book featuring different sort of animals. Bubba also love that book to bits for we would take turns to mimic the sounds of the animals which gets her all excited.

IMG_2791Here’s some background information about Flip for Joy which Meiru shared with me:

1. They are book recommendations from a parent to another.

Flip for Joy’s book selection is good enough for my own child. Being an ex JC Chinese language teacher, I have high expectations when it comes to educational resources and I’m very passionate about teaching the Chinese langauge to my child. A lot of time and effort have been spent on searching for books that are fun, exciting and engaging. I’ll always try reading the books with my 6 year old before writing the sypnosis and recommendations in both Chinese and English so as to help parents choose the best for their children.

I especially appreciated that. For someone who had little idea on what kind of Mandarin books to get for Bubba, Meiru was extremely helpful in picking out the books for Bubba. Additionally, Bubba has only just turned one and it was great that she could pick the books that would appeal to young readers.

2. We have categorized our books into 3 main categories: Flip for FUN, KNOWLEDGE, LOVE

Flip for FUN books are highly interactive and a whole lot of fun!
Flip for KNOWLEDGE are insightful and have rich elements of story-telling.
Flip for LOVE books help children love the important values in life.

With the simple classification of the categories, it was relatively easy to navigate the Flip for Joy’s site to look for books. My only challenge is trying to use the Chinese keyboard to search for the titles of the books. But you know what? Meiru has been very helpful and a quick search online also revealed that she is often more than willing to go the extra mile to curate a selection of books for little ones if needed. So when in doubt, feel free to just email her and ask for help. I’m sure she will not hesitate to lend a helping hand.

3. Many of our books are bestsellers and award-winning titles loved by children worldwide and we have a good bilingual selection

We bring in the best books from all over the world (UK, US, Europe, Korea, Japan, China etc). You can find popular childrens’ titles such as Dear Zoo, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See, The Giving Tree etc in our bookstores and the best part is, children can now get to enjoy these classics in the Chinese language or even in both languages.

Again, another plus! If you do not know where to start on Mandarin books, perhaps you can follow in my footsteps. I simply got Mandarin titles of her fave books like Dear Zoo and The Hungry Caterpillar as a start. Since she already knew how the story went in English, the Man simply had to read to her the story in Mandarin. Meiru was really sweet to include one of Eric Cayle’s titles called Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See.

4. We offer free local standard mail for all orders and free courier delivery to your doorstep for orders S$50 and above.

5. Like Flip for Joy on Facebook (www.facebook.com/flipforjoy) to be kept updated on our latest happenings and promotions and benefit from the many articles and resources shared (on the teaching of the Chinese language, ways to encourage your child to read, parenting etc).

Here are the titles that we have received (from Top Left to Right):
  1. 超萌花样折页翻翻书系列(我的朋友上,下)
  2. 爸爸的亲亲
  3. 1,2,3到动物园
  4. 我喜欢吃草
  5. 爱的表白书(6册)
Some of Bubba’s fave reads are 爸爸的亲亲 and (我的朋友上,下) which the Man reads to her when he can. As for me, reading Mandarin books have always posed a challenge to me so I try my best.

Little Innoscents & BioShield for Bubba

[Sponsored review]

IMG_2403 After this post where I tried out the Bio-Shield Kiddie Spray as well as some of the Little Innoscents products, the good folks at All Organic and Natural sent us a lovely pack of more organic goodies for Bubba to try! Timing was impeccable if I may add for it was just before our little get-away to Phuket and I was fretting about packing her toiletries. When I packed them all, the Man just gave me a look and went, ‘1 kg of toiletries for a 4-day getaway? Seriously?!’ Well, one can never be too prepared right?!

Here are the goodies that we received:

IMG_2404Bio Shield Kiddie Organic spray (100ml) : S$23.30
A vitamin based, dermatologist-tested body protectant, Bio Shield Kiddie safely and temporarily protects the skin of children as young as babies from toxins, bacteria and allergens in areas where they are most likely to fester. Formulated with natural ingredients, this topical body protectant spray is developed to maintain and enhance the skin’s natural immune functions.

IMG_2419Sounds like a power-packed bottle of goodness to protect Bubba on-the-go. Now that she is a little more mobile, I do get a little paranoid about the stuff that she randomly picks up and stuffs into her mouth. On top of the normal wet wipes, I have anti-bacterial wet-wipes, hand-and-mouth wet-wipes, pacifier wet-wipes, etc.. you know what I mean.

I like this handy spray that I can just stuff into our diaper bag. A quick spritz or two of the Bio Shield Kiddie over Bubba helps to protect her from the germs for it kills 99.9% of germs naturally. It’s alcohol-free, non-greasy and the formula is easily absorbed into the skin providing a protective layer for the user. We used the spray rather liberally on our travel. I sprayed Bubba in the airplane, upon arrival to Phuket and when we were in the taxi. I know that I can’t keep Bubba in a bubble forever and that there will always be germs in the environment but this spray can help protect her and minimise her exposure to germs, which is good enough for me.

On top of that, we received lovely goodies from the Little Innoscents range:

Little Innoscents products are Australian made with 100% Natural, Pure and Organic ingredients. Completely free from Toxic Chemicals, Parabens and all other little hidden nasties.

IMG_2408

Little Innoscents Sun Lotion (100ml) : S$21.30
Bubba was going to make her debut to the pool during our fam trip to Phuket. So ahead of the trip, I had to prepare not only her swim gear but also sun screen to protect her from the hards UVA/ UVB rays. There aren’t many sunscreen lotion out in the market that’s available for babies so this sun lotion from Little Innoscents suited our needs.  Free from chemical absorbers and suitable for all skin types, this sun lotion is safe to use on children from 6 months of age.

This zinc-based sunscreen is free from nanoparticles and I like that they use natural ingredients of Aloe Vera and Calendula which makes the lotion lightly scented when applied on Bubba’s skin.IMG_2501The sun screen is easy to apply as well as easily absorbed into Bubba’s skin. It doesn’t leave behind a sticky white residue that some sun screens do. This product is the top of my shopping list especially for our hot and humid weather in Singers so it’s best to apply and protect Bubba’s soft skin to prevent any harsh exposure to the sun’s rays especially now that we intend to bring her to the pool more often.

IMG_2409Little Innoscents Travel Pack
This travel pack couldn’t have come at a better time! Seriously! It has all the best of the Little Innoscents products in small packaging. For the trip, I simply just brought the whole pack along for Bubba which consisted of the Organic Baby Hair & Body Wash, Organic Baby Moisturising Lotion, Organic Baby Intensive Soothing Cream (which I used as diaper cream) and Organic Winter Blues Vapour Balm.

Majority of the Little Innoscents bath range is made from plant materials and naturally-derived plant extracts so the range of products are usually pH balanced and ideal for daily use on babies even those with skin conditions such as eczema.

The Man was in charge of Bubba’s bath time ritual so he was the primary user of the products.

Verdict? Well, he didn’t quite like the Hair & Body Wash for he felt that it didn’t foam as much as the ones that we used for Bubba back home. The Little Innoscents Hair & Wash is a low-suds bath gel that is infused with the essential oils of Sweet Orange, with anti-inflammatory properties, and Sandalwood, with its anti-septic properties. If you are used to those foaming types of hair and body wash, you may have the same response as the Man but let me tell you that despite the low-suds quality, it still did the job of cleaning Bubba up well.

Next, the Organic Baby Moisturising Lotion. Infused with a light floral scent of Ylang Ylang and packed with the luxuriant oils of avocado and sunflower, this moisturising lotion helps provide all skin types with the necessary hydration, nourishment and protection for your baby.

Diaper creams are a must-have in my diaper bag and in the list of Bubba’s toiletries. The Organic Baby Intensive Soothing Cream sounds like a miracle cream that can not only soothe sore bottoms but also insect bites, eczema and even minor wounds. This cream contains the astringent and antiseptic properties of the Rosewood essential oil which will take care of a variety of skin issues, the healing properties of Calendula extract and the creamy Shea Butter as a base. That’s not all, have you ever come across a delicious-smelling diaper cream? Well, this one is.

Days before we went on our holiday, Bubba came down with a viral fevet and then a cough and a cold. Triple whammy! I brought along the Vicks Vapour Rub but this Organic Winter Blues Vapour Balm was much better. Gentle on sinuses, I warmed Bubba’s body by rubbing her little feet and chest with the Vapour Balm that’s has essential oils of Wintergreen and Eucalyptus. Many of similar vapour balms available in the market out there may not be ideal on babies but this Vapour Balm is for it’s 100% natural and has a low allergen ingredients that is also safe for babies with sensitive skin!

IMG_2407Little Innoscents Massage Oil (125 ml): S$16.90
I do enjoy giving Bubba a massage occasionally before she heads off to bed. This works especially when she’s cranky before bedtime. The baby massage ritual helps me bond with her plus the essential oils of Spearmint, Lavender, Lemongrass and Sweet Orange helps calm her and hopefully lull her to sleep.

This massage oil is suitable for all skin types and even grown-ups. I’ve heard it may work wonders on mummies who need a stretch mark oil to soothe the stretched skin. Yay to sharing toiletries with Bubba then for this.

IMG_2406Little Innoscents Mineral Powder (100g) : S$11.60
I’ve been using this on Bubba when I noticed that she has some heat rash around her neck area. It has helped soothe the redness plus keep her cool. I love that the scent of the powder is different from your usual baby powder available in the market. The Lavender and Spearmint essential oils not only give it a sweet scent but also make this powder ideal for adults to use without smelling too overly baby-ish (if you know what I mean). Other uses that you can explore with this mineral powder include chaffing, heat rash, stinky feet plus restoring shine to dull and greasy hair. Miracle powder yeah?

Little Innoscents Goat’s Milk and Manuka Honey Soap : S$8.30
Honestly, I’m not a big fan of bar soaps so when I received this, I didn’t know if I wanted to let Bubba use this. Guess what? I didn’t. In the end, I kept it for myself and used it to wash and cleanse my make-up brushes.

I cannot stress enough the importance of cleaning your make-up tools especially brushes regularly. I used to do it rather frequently before Bubba came along. With her arrival, I’ve been a little lazy but I still bring out the tools once a month to wash them and always with a gentle soap. Steps on how to do so can be found here.

This soap containing goat’s milk and manuka honey, is designed for delicate and sensitive skin. Manuka honey is generally used for treating minor wounds and burns and has antibacterial properties, with studies showing its effectiveness in fighting infection and promoting healing. Goat’s milk contains lactic acid which helps in breaking down dead skin cells, allowing skin to naturally rejuvenate. It is also packed with vitamins and nutrients like vitamin A, B and C, amino acids, citric acids as well as unsaturated fatty acids. On top of that, it has a PH level similar to that of our skin!

I figured if this is good enough for our skin, it’s good enough to cleanse my delicate brushes that would be used on my skin as well. Will keep this soap around and who knows I may just use it on Bubba one day.

Hope you guys enjoyed this post. It’s a little long but these products have been pretty useful to us and our little one. Do keep a look out for these organic baby skincare products that’s made available to everyone at such pocket-friendly prices.

You can get your hands on the Bio Shield and The Little Innoscents range at NTUC Finest, 1010 Mother & Child Essentials or simply shop online at www.all-organic-natural.com

It’s easy to get SafeHands!

[Sponsored Review]

Before Bubba’s arrival, I was busy reading up and stocking up on hand sanitizers. There are many brands available in the market and I got them off the shelf. The only problem I had with some of the popular brands available out there is with prolonged use of the hand sanitizers which are very often alcohol-based, my hands became really dry. My manicurist even remarked how dry my hands have become. So I went the organic route trying to search for the perfect hand sanitizer to keep my hands clean but haven’t quite found one that I liked.

IMG_0714Our Lifestyle Shop to the rescue with the trio pack of SafeHands sanitizers that Su-Lin recently passed on to me. I’ve been waiting for them to launch this for a couple of months now, so I was really pleased when Su-Lin passed me not just one but three different SafeHands sanitizers to try!

IMG_0718SafeHands is the number 1 brand in consumer friendliness and is super safe for children. You’ll have none of the negatives that’s associated with alcohol-based hand sanitizers. This is important because multiple daily usage of alcohol-based hand sanitizers can leave hands red and cracked. There came a point in time when I was sanitizing my hand pretty often with these alcohol-based hand sanitizers that my hands felt really dry. I eventually ditched sanitizing my hands altogether for a while to give them a break. This was not ideal obviously because I needed my hands to be cleaned and preferably germ-free when I’m handling Bubba.

IMG_0722SafeHands is available in a bundle pack of Cucumber Mint, Clean Linen and Unscented. Size-wise, it’s a lot larger than I packed the Cucumber Mint into my diaper bag and headed out to test it out.

IMG_0725Coincidentally, how cool is it that the Cucumber Mint matches my new mint-green diaper bag!

IMG_0952And the Clean Linen one even matches our Diaper backpack! Hehe..

IMG_0875
SafeHands kills 99.99% of germs, yet is gentle to the skin with a pleasant fragrance. The germ-killing activity actually increases the more frequently the product is used throughout the day. It is alcohol-free and contains a moisturizing agent to keep the hands feeling soft and clean with every use. Again, another important factor as I don’t have the time to constantly slather on hand lotion these days. Plus when I’m holding Bubba, I don’t really like to put on too much hand lotion as I’m afraid that she might end up licking the lotion. What I really liked about SafeHands is that it kills germs without stripping away the skins natural oils. Therefore, it never leaves the skin dry. I think this should be the new standard for instant hand sanitizing – no more dry hands please!

IMG_0758Pardon the mess but here’s how we put SafeHands to good use. I guess anywhere and everywhere. Cleansing or sanitizing our hands before and after our meals. Even though the bottle is larger than usual brands, it wasn’t too difficult to lug it around. As you can see, I just placed it in the side-pocket of my diaper bag so that I can easily access SafeHands as and when I need it. Given it’s slightly larger size, I liked how it can be shared with the family at our weekly dinners. I just whipped it out and my sis chimes in to my nephews the importance of sanitizing their hands before dinner. They then come to me and whip out both their tiny hands for me to dispense the foam hand sanitizer on their palms. Just one pump is sufficient enough to sanitize both of their hands. No wastage and no need to use more than its needed.IMG_0876

And did I mention, how fresh the Cucumber Mint SafeHands sanitizer smell? I wish you could have a whiff of its scent off the screen. The Man’s fave is the Clean Linen one which also smells great but my fave of the lot is the Cucumber Mint. 🙂

October’s Vaby Box

Guess who was thrilled to receive this month’s Vaby Box?

IMG_9220And rightfully so for this month’s Vaby Box contained most of the stuff that Bubba can use.

IMG_9223

Here are the items that was tucked inside the Vaby Box:

  • The Q10 Skin : A premium Peppermint essence that’s made of pure beeswax which can help numb the area to stop itch and can also be used to clear any nasal congestion. What I like about this is how small it is, perfect to tuck inside my diaper bag and for any unforseen medical emergencies. (1 piece at S$5 / bundled pack of 6 pcs at S$24 and 10 pcs at S$40)
  • Summer Citrus 5X Dishwashing Liquid by IDOCARE : Love how compact this dishwashing liquid is which is perfect for our next family getaway. One thing I learn about traveling with babies is that you will also need to pack a gentle dishwashing liquid to be used for washing of  their bottles plus my breast pump. What’s great about this product is that it can effectively remove the grease from the bottles and yet gentle on my hands. Ever since Bubba’s arrival, I have kinda neglected my hands for I find it a little too troublesome to moisturise my hands and then carry her. So this product is ideal and not add on to drying of my skin. The price of this product is also pretty attractive at 500ml per bottle for only S$6.95.
  • Everyday Head to Toe Cleanser by Bud Cosmetics: A cleanser that you could add to your baby’s bath or simply on a wet-towel to wipe baby down. I used the latter option instead as Bubba takes one shower a day and does a wipe-down in the evenings. Love the soft scent from this cleanser that lingered on Bubba as we wiped her down and put her in her jammies, all ready for bed.
  • Hiruscar : I’m so prone to scaring and keloids so I’m pretty intrigued with this product. Perhaps those keloids that I had with my previous op with soften and smoothen out with this gel. Well, one can only hope that this works.
  • Boony Baby Diapers : Never quite heard of this brand of diapers but don’t mind trying it out to see if it’s absorption of urine is good. Price-wise, it’s one of the lowest that I’ve seen in the market at S$12.80 for a pack of 36 to 58 pcs depending on size of diapers. That is cheap right?
  • Nuturmeals (Scrumptious Squash-flavour) : In preparation for Bubba’s journey into solids! Not sure if this will actually taste any good but I guess if I mix it up with breastmilk and use it as a spread on breads for Bubba, it may work? Well, let’s see.. will update when that happens.
  • The Playhouse S$5 food voucher

I’m having a lot of fun testing out the products tucked in October’sVaby Box and you can also do so by signing up as a member. Remember to also like them on Facebook to find out more about their shopping deals. 🙂

Shopping made easy at Agape Babies

[Sponsored Review]

I miss shopping in real life.. I really, really do. These days with a baby in tow, I no longer can shop at leisure for I zip in and out of town or a venue really quickly at lightning speed. Thank goodness for online shopping where I can shop at leisure in the comfort of my home (without worrying whether I am dressed appropriately or have make-up on). The good thing about shopping online has gotta be the ease of getting almost everything I need in just one site and not having to lug all these items back home on my own.

Some friends and fellow blogger Miss Ene shared of Agape Babies for the place to go to purchase California Baby products. As a skin-care junkie, I headed down to check out the site hoping to pop in some Calendula Cream for Sophie. I was bowled over by the number of products and brands that they have. I started to like their Facebook page and followed them on Instagram. For the month of June, they had this #AgapeDailyDeals where they featured different products at some really attractive prices.

IMG_7561Being a fan of Sophie La Giraffe products for my little gal – Sophie, I was super pleased when the toiletries under the Sophie La Giraffe range went for an attractive price. I immediately #AgapeDailyDeals and placed my order with Agape Babies. My products arrived within 2 days just in time for me to use them on Sophie. 🙂 After this shopping experience, I hadn’t gone back to shopping at Agape Babies until this review.

logo_banner (1)

What I didn’t know about Agape Babies before? They are a multi-store which is a pretty new concept in Asia. Currently, there’s 2 stores (Agape Babies & Sunshine Kids) but they are looking to add on new stores and more products in the near future!

Agape Babies offers a huge range of products, with over 100 brands and 2000 products in store. They specialize in California Baby products (cue prices that are so much more competitive than what you get out there) and have extended their product offerings to even carry diapers and milk formula of brands such as Huggies, Mamypoko, GOO.N, Friso, Similac, Gain IQ, Pediasure and more! Well, even more reason to bookmark this site permanently for I don’t have to surf different sites to get all the things I may need for the little one! Whee!

I headed back to the site again and started doing what I do best – shopping for Sophie – with the credits that the folks at Agape Babies so kindly given to me. Here’s what I picked out for her:

calendula2ozbigCalifornia Baby Calendula Cream : I used this for a good part of my pregnancy and this is supposed to be really good for baby’s skin for its natural and soft properties are gentle enough for their tender skin. I decided to give this a try for Sophie’s skin for those milk rashes that she sometimes are prone in getting.

the-wheels-on-the-bus

Read and Sing Along – The Wheels on the Bus: Sophie seems to like music a lot and I find that when she cries, singing or putting on some music seems to calm her down so this CD with the children’s tunes are perfect for us now. This is going in the car for me to sing to her when she wails. Fingers crossed it will work.

fever-patch-front-(2)Hello Kitty Fever Cooling Relief Patch: For those medical emergency to cool the kiddos.

hello_kitty_mosquito_repellent_patch

Hello Kitty Mosquito Relief Patch: Handy to keep around when we bring Sophie around the parks for her evening walks to help keep the mozzies away.

What I liked shopping at the site apart from the many brands available under one roof? The ease of shopping for stuff on its mobile site. Believe me when you are nursing a baby and watching the time pass by, shopping on the mobile is really pretty handy. Thank goodness for smart phones too, else time will probably pass by a lot slower.

So head on down to Agape Babies to do a spot of shopping for yourself or for your little one. There’s free courier delivery with S$80 spend and with every S$120 purchase, a free Disney stationery set awaits. I probably will stock up my diapers for Sophie with Agape Babies next time as that will save me the trouble of buying it at the store.

Here’s a special offer for my readers, thanks to the folks at Agape Babies:
Simply quote “ladyjmusings” to be entitled  to a 5% discount at Agape Babies! The code is valid from 28 August to 25 September 2014 and excludes breast pumps, diapers and milk.
