Power up with Hao Yi Kang

Chicken essence has traditionally been known to boost energy levels, combat fatigue and strengthen the immune system when consumed regularly. That’s what I’ve been told by the Man and the MIL but I really don’t agree with the taste for mass consumer brands for chicken essence that is widely available at most supermarkets. My mom never really gave it to us to boost our energy levels growing up. And when I tried it in my later years as an adult. I really balked at – first, the colour of the mixture and secondly, the taste. I couldn’t really fathom why would people drink this dark mixture which looked like cough syrup gone wrong. No offense to any particular brand of conventional chicken essence, it’s just a personal preference. I later learned that it tasted better if the mixture up but well, first impressions do count and I couldn’t bring myself to try it again.

Which was why during my pregnancy years ago, I resorted to making my own chicken essence to help with my energy levels as well as to nourish my body. I have to add that it was really tedious for one entire chicken goes into the boiler to make a small bowl of essence. But I treasured every bowl of essence that my helper and my MIL helped to make for it really did help me get through the day at work without feeling overly tired and grouchy.

Fast forward some 5 years later, moms-to-be and adults for that matter will be really happy to know that there is now a much convenient way to get your chicken essence without having to rough it out in the kitchen!

Introducing Lao Xie Zhen Premium Boiled Essence of Chicken exclusively distributed by Hao Yi Kang!

I’ve heard of Hao Yi Kang from mummies as well as working moms. The packaging looks convenient for people-on-the-go. But more importantly, will I be able to get past the taste? I had been feeling poorly on and off for the past couple of months and was desperate to get my health back in order. So I purchased a box of chicken essence from Hao Yi Kang to try.

Verdict? Well, I got past the colour of the mixture. It had a natural yellow colour (reminded me of the chicken essence that was homemade) and taste-wise, it was extremely palatable on for my liking. I’ve gone on to purchase boxes of this for friends and my family for the packaging makes it so easy to bring around and so convenient to consume (no glass bottles to rid of).

When the folks at Hao Yi Kang reached out to me and asked if I was keen on reviewing the Lao Xie Zhen Premium Boiled Essence of Chicken. I jumped on the opportunity! I really enjoyed drinking the essence and I was looking forward to sharing the feedback I have on the essence with you.

Some key points on this premium boiled essence of chicken that’s useful to note:

  • Using traditional slow-boiling method, both micro-molecules (collagen, peptide, amino acids, ets) and macro-molecules (proteins) can be fully extracted from the chicken.
  • It is 100% natural (no preservatives, no additives, zero fats and cholesterol) and contains 18 types of amino acids.
  • The ingredients for this is free-range chicken and premium pork-ribs.

Who can consume this?

  • Best for pregnant moms as it helps in the growth of the baby. It can repair cells and tissues in the body and is helpful towards fetal support during pregnancy as well as wound healing during post-natal conditioning. It promoted post-natal milk secretion and can enhance the quality of the milk.
  • For students, elderly and working adults: The high protein content makes it ideal for daily nourishment and supplement during recuperation. It also helps to boost immune system and can combat fatigue.

I also liked that each packet of essence is packaged conveniently for room temperature storage, in a 4-layered opaque sachet exclusively imported from Japan. Similar to a baby bottle, the inner packaging material is tested with no plastic and heavy metal reside thus making it very safe to consume.

Shelf life can be stored up to 18 months after manufacturing without preservatives. Using Japan’s technology of high temperature and high-pressure sterilization sealing method to preserve the nutrients.

On preparation of the essence, it is really easy! All you need to do is to put the unopened sachet into a cup of hot water for 3 minutes, tear open the sachet and ta-dah, it’s ready to consume!

Love the convenience of the product and I will consider bringing it when we travel. Bub still likes her Asian meals so this essence will come in handy when she misses her soup with rice!

When should one take the chicken essence? I would highly recommend that you consume this in the morning before breakfast for the best effect. It really does help to boost energy levels and I don’t feel as tired. Do not consume this at night! I once made the mistake for I was tempted to drink it as a soup and it gone horribly wrong as I was kept awake for most of the night.

Moms will also be happy to know that the Lao Xie Zhen Premium Boiled Essence of Chicken can also be consumed by children above 2 years old. The Bub is really quite picky when it comes to trying out new foods. So when I had my essence ready and tore the packaging, she caught a whiff of the essence and was opened to trying a sip of it. She loved it and proceeded to gulp down spoonfuls of the essence after. Imagine my happiness! Granted that she is still young to be boosting her energy levels (in fact, she’s often bouncing off the walls), but continued consumption of the essence will help strengthen her immunity and that to me is way more important!

Voted 2018 best chicken essence for pre-natal and post-natal by Mummys Market Singapore, Lao Xie Zhen Premium Boiled Essence of Chicken from Hao Yi Kang definitely won our hearts over and has our vote for the best-tasting chicken essence! It makes great gifts for moms-to-be and new moms as well as a great perk-me-up for combating fatigue which is the state that I am currently in. Looking forward to more regular consumption too so as to strengthen my immunity.

Kitchen Aid x Mother’s Day Cookout

We were invited by Kitchen Aid for this Mother’s Day cooking event at Little House of Dreams over the weekend and we had a lovely time – with me learning how to make Shepherd’s Pie using the Kitchen Aid stand mixer and the food grinder attachment and the little one having a ball of a time feasting on the cookies and also the goodies that the Kitchen Aid team specially prepared.

There were about 6 pairs who were also invited to this intimate gathering and it’s amazing how the 3 hours passed by so quickly. We each learned how to make Shepherd’s Pie with the ingredients that were specially prepared for each of us. I diced those onions and garlic as Cooking Mama while the Bub munched on her fave cookie with icing and watched me do the prep work. When it came to mincing the chicken meat, I learned how to fasten the food grinder attachment with the Kitchen Aid stand mixer and realised how quick the tool actually grinded up the meat. I used to think that this could only be used of making sausages but truth be told, we don’t eat a lot of sausages and it’s way faster to purchase them from a deli. But this meat grinder attachment is actually pretty useful for you know exactly what type of meat goes into the minced mixture. Remove the fatty bits from the chicken skin for it ain’t healthy and what you get is pure minced chicken. Really good for making burgers as well as making fine food for little ones. I can’t wait to experiment more with this device.

And I used to think that the Kitchen Aid stand mixer is only good for making cakes and sweet stuff. But of course, this simple cooking session changed my impression of that. Well, we did make Mee Hoon Kueh using the Kitchen Aid stand mixer. What I also learned is that the beater attachment can also mash potatoes! How useful is that tip?! I mean, I used to stand around the kitchen with my fork and exerted all that energy to mash the potatoes finely. Now that I know that the Kitchen Aid can do the job quickly, I’m really excited that we can have truffled mash in our occasional cook-outs soon! I wonder if it can mash steamed cauliflower too? Hmm..

We were also treated to a simple feast of pasta, pizza and chicken wings while we prepped our Shepherd’s Pie and also learned how versatile the Kitchen Aid can also be for the home. They also now have an additional Ice Cream bowl attachment which allow you to whip up ice-cream in the comfort of your own home. This is pretty useful if you want a device that can almost do everything by purchasing different attachments rather than purchasing different devices.

Please check out this simple video highlights of the Kitchen Aid event and if I do recreate the dish, I’ll be sure to share the recipe here!

Thanks Kitchen Aid Singapore for inviting us to be part of your Mother’s Day celebration. It was lovely meeting other ladies who specially brought their moms along and we are looking forward to the next Mom-and-Me cooking session. 🙂

One awesome gift for this Mama from Kitchen Aid

My eyes did a double blink when I saw this email from the folks at Kitchen Aid. They first invited us to an upcoming Mother’s Day workshop and then asked if we would be open to reviewing their items as part of the collab. I was really quite excited.. “A Kitchen Aid! WOW!!!” But of course, I’m the sort who didn’t want to count its chicks before they hatch, so I just waited to see what they would offer and lo and behold, they did offer the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer from the Artisan Series in Empire Red. The pastel colours in the range are really to die for but the red did stand out and hold its ground. Plus, it would also look just as fetching when placed next to our Nespresso coffee machine also in red. So that was the one we received!

When I was aggressively baking years ago, holed up in a small kitchen in our apartment in Geneva, I did lem for a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer. After all, it’s THE Mixer of all mixers and this gorgeous device is often seen in many gourmet kitchens and kitchens of aspiring home-cooks. But I got scolded by the Man for even harbouring the thought of purchasing one as we moved from place to place then. It would not be pratical to lug it from one country to the next. So I just relied on my handheld mixer for many of my bakes. Till this fantastic opportunity came along!

After the initial unboxing of this gorgeous device was done (the kiddo helped too), I wondered hard and long what am I going to start baking/ cooking with this helpful kitchen device? My baking skills have somewhat become dusty along the way and the kid doesn’t quite have a sweet tooth so she might not appreciate the sweets like cupcakes and muffins that I whip up for her. I decided then to try using the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer for another purpose instead.

We all have our fave dish that is reminiscent of our childhood. Something special that our moms have made that would warm our hearts along with our bellies. For me, it was always the oyster chicken with mushrooms dish and the salted vegetable duck soup – my mom’s speciality dishes. My mom was not a home-maker, she had a full-time job and in fact, juggled a few jobs when we were growing up but she did try to cook for us occasionally and now, she really does make it a point to cook for us at least once a week when we go back home on Sundays. Her meals are always simple but I really appreciate the time and effort that she put in to cook the many dishes to feed the entire family of 8 or more when the troop goes over.

For the Man, it would always be his mom’s Mee Hoon Kueh (hand torn noodles). My mom-in-law makes the mee hoon kueh from scratch, kneaded the dough mixture by hand and cooking the broth from scratch. The side dish to be accompanied with the Mee Hoon Kueh is a simple, broiled pork belly with sesame oil because growing up, they really didn’t have a lot so pork belly was considered a treat for the Man and his mom. Last but not least, the condiments such as fried shallots, pepper and ikan billis that will generously be sprinkled on this homemade and simple noodle dish.

This Mee Hoon Kueh dish is always the dish the Man would request for after a long trip away from home and this dish would also be the dish that Sophie would also request for from her grandma if she’s feeling poorly or as and when she wants her grandma to cook her a happy meal My mom-in-law would always oblige when it came to cooking for her son and granddaughter.

Years back when we were living in Geneva and because we were away from home, the Man actually recreated his mom’s Mee Hoon Kueh dish. Now that we are back home, we hardly have to make this dish from scratch but I did want to learn how to do this as my mom-in-law travels quite a fair bit now and on days when Sophie actually requests for this when she’s not around, I find myself telling her to have something else or to resort having to run out to the hawker centre to buy a bowl for her as we don’t have the ingredients stashed at home. Even though it’s the same type of noodles, the taste is not quite the same. Nothing quite beats the home-made “feels”,  if you know what I mean. Maybe it’s the way the noodles are rolled into small pieces of dough, mashed and then torn to make up little pieces of cooked and starchy goodness.

Well, it does appear that the recipe of making the Mee Hoon Kueh has been simplified and kneading the dough by hand would be a preferred method but having the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer do the job in half the time was this lazy mama’s hack in putting the meal on the table. We  started prepping our meal (together with the little one at 6.30pm) and made the hand torn noodles in under 20 minutes. The broth was prepared in advance and dinner was served at 7.10pm. To prep a meal with a kid in tow, I’d say we did well on time!

Mee Hoon Kueh (Hand torn noodles)

For the noodles:
4 cups of rice flour
1 medium egg
1/2 tsp salt
250 ml of cooled water

For the topping:
Fried shallots
Fried ikan bilis

For the soup stock:
150g ikan bilis, rinsed and drained
1.5 litres water
A bunch of spinach, trimmed
1 tsp salt
6 tbsp deep-fried ikan bilis
Onion oil, to taste
Pepper, to taste

1) To make the noodles, mix the flour, egg, salt and water evenly in a mixing bowl. Using the dough mixer attachment, turn on Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer on low speed (ie: Speed 1) before gradually increasing it to a slightly higher speed. We used up to Speed 3.

2) Once the dough mixture comes together to form a ball, transfer the dough mixture into another mixing bowl.

3) Place some rice flour on your fingers and continue to knead the mixture in the bowl until it doesn’t stick to the hands.

4) Peel the dough into small balls of about 1 to 2cm. Press and flatten each ball till about 2mm thick. Set aside till ready to cook.

5) To make the soup, add the ikan bilis to 1.5 litres of water and bring it to bowl. Simmer over low heat for about 20 mins. Remove the ikan bilis and then add in spinach and egg (if desired).

6) Add the mee hoon kuey. When the noodles rise to the surface, scoop out noodles and broth in a bowl and serve.

This simple soup dish is extremely versatile and you can also add additional ingredients such as mushrooms, prawns and even minced meatballs to accompany the noodles.

Seriously, it is quite simple to make the mee hoon kueh with the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer using the dough attachment. Even my kid could do this as you can see. Well, you may ask why even bother using a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer to do something that simple? True, but if you are going to be investing in a piece of machinery only to use it for rare occasions then is this a worthy investment? The idea is that this device is supposed to help you around in the kitchen and to help put out dishes quick and fast for the family. That’s my rationale of a worthy investment.

Thanks Kitchen Aid Singapore for sending this lovely Stand Mixer to us. It really is a beautiful piece of machinery which is now a permanent fixture on our kitchen counter. Can’t wait to try out other recipes with this. So stay tuned!

Bringing the Spa to your home..

Truth be told, I really do love my massages and every other week, it’s the couple time that the Man and I would possibly indulge in. Putting the kiddo at my Mom’s place before heading off for a much-needed 90 minute massage. Yes, it’s a luxury but because I hardly ever exercise, those knots in my lower and upper back get so tight so the weekly massages to relieve the tension does help.

In December (yes, you read right, last year), I was treated to a home massage session from The Outcall Spa and it was seriously divine. I did not need to even step out of my home to enjoy a massage for they brought the spa right to my home.

I was very impressed with the services that they had to offer, not to mention the attention to details paid in replicating the entire spa experience in my very own home. The massage bed was set up promptly at the time of my massage. Everything you see in the picture below was prepared by my therapist (also named Joanne) who even brought along her own portable speakers loaded with all the soothing spa music that accompanied the session.

The 90-minute session was indeed very enjoyable in the comfort of my own room. The Bub was sleeping so that was an added plus! I think the services provided by The Outcall Spa are simply fantastic for moms or even young couples who often find it hard to leave home for a massage for you can book a massage at 10 or 11pm in the night after you put your kids to bed. Yes, the mom guilt is real but it’s also important to treat yourself and take some time for yourself. It is only then you will be able to give your best to your child, family and whatever you do.

Did I also mention that after your massage, you also get to enjoy a warm cup of ginger tea (just like some of the spas that offer this)! So you are totally not missing out on the full spa experience when you utilise services from The Outcall Spa.

If you are looking for a gift idea for your loved ones or friends or event a treat for yourself for 2018, I’m certain a massage or even a nail service treatment from The Outcall Spa would be greatly appreciated.

Simply quote “TOMAMAJ” to enjoy 15% off all services. This discount is also extended to the purchase of gift cards. Prices start from S$50 and the promotion code is valid till 31 Jan 2018 (only 15 more days to enjoy this).

Thanks to The Outcall Spa for ths massage and my lovely therapist Joanne for kneading those dreaded knots away.

Goodbye Konk! Hello Eco-PY!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

After 5 years, my trusty generation 1 of KONK® has finally called it a day! I realised one day when I tried changing the battery of the device and it didn’t work. When I brought it to Sulin from Our Lifestyle Shop to see if there is anything that can be done from a technical point of view, she shared that it was probably time for it to retire the product. Well, 5 years is indeed long and given that it was dispensing KONK in the air and helping to kill the mozzies, it has served us well.

Thankfully, there is now a new product that Our Lifestyle Shop has launched to replace my trusty mozzie/ insect killer device! Remember the Ecomist Odour Neutraliser (now shortened to Eco-On) that we reviewed previously? The Eco-PY help to keep insects at bay using the same Ecomist Automated Dispenser.

I had purchased the Ecomist Bundle Deal previously and proceeded to install a can of the Eco-PY into the Automated Dispenser for our living room. When we are at home, the Bub actually spends quite a fair amount of her time downstairs. It’s also the place where we get subjected to mozzie bites. I often have to put an insect repellent spray on the Bub’s arms and legs plus stick an insect repellent patch on her clothes. Even then, she’s not spared. So having the Eco-PY insect killer actually does help to put my mind to ease that she’s protected. One thing I do like about the Eco-Py insect killer is that it’s odourless. So it complimented the Odour Neutraliser that we also place in the living room.

So what is the Eco-PY capable of doing and how does it quite compare to its predecessor?

Automated Eco-PY Insect Killer Kit:
Eco-PY Insect Killer main ingredient is Pyrethrin, a natural extract from the chrysanthemum flower and it is safe to use around humans. It acts as a natural deterrent and when used, creates a protective barrier against these insects. Effective against flying and crawling insects such as mosquitoes, houseflies, fruit flies, ants and whatś more, it repels cockroaches! This is similar to the KONK Flying Insect Killer where the main ingredient also included Pyrethin.

Here’s a quick recap on how pyrethrins works?
Pyrethrins act on the nervous systems of insects; initially hyper-stimulating the nerves, then later blocking nerve synapses leading to death. Insects affected by pyrethrins, tend to fly in a crazed (yea, you read right, it’s not a typo) manner towards light; it’s called the phototropic effect.

And of course, if you have little ones and/or pets at home, you will also wonder if the Eco-PY really indeed safe for humans. The answer is Yes as the amounts of active ingredients that are dispensed into the air from the dispenser and circulated via proper ventilation are  so miniscule that they will not have any adverse effects on mammals (humans and warm blooded pets). In fact, the amount of product dispensed by an Eco-Py dispenser over the course of one day is less than a 5 second burst from a supermarket brand space spray.

Pyrethrins are the insecticide in the formulation. They have very low mammalian toxicity and break down very quickly once exposed to light so are considered very safe for humans and warm blooded pets. We say warm blooded because pyrethrins are very toxic to fish and other aquatic creatures. So please do not place the Eco-PY near your fish-tank if you do own one at home.

Here is a special promotion that Our Lifestyle Shop will be for the month of Nov.

Learning fun with Fiddle & Doodle

We first chanced upon Fiddle & Doodle several months back when I was looking for educational material to enhance the Bub’s learning journey at home. I don’t think I would call myself a Tiger Mom. I don’t need her to be constantly learning for I believe that she already spends majority of the week in school. Weekends and public holidays are meant more for play. But play can also be purposeful; to instill a sense of curiosity and creativity when the child explore play.

I am guilty of not letting the Bub play more for sometimes when I’m just too tired to come up with exciting, fun ways to entertain her, I cop-out and reach out for the remote control knowing that her fave cartoons on television will definitely keep her occupied. So I guess my search on the educational and fun material for the Bub is my way of spending time with her as I help her navigate the different activities.

Ada from Fiddle & Doodle sent us their newly launched Match and Learn puzzles as well as their popular Dabber Dot Markers Starter Kit. The little one could not wait to get started immediately on her new learning toys. I was excited to receive these items from Fiddle & Doodle and I had to deliberately hide them from her for the moment she sees them, she would badger me to allow her to open her “present”.

Carved out some time over the National Day holiday for her to play with her new learning toys. First up, the Dabber Dot Markers Starter Kit comes with a box of Dabber Dot Markers as well as an activity pad with over 30 activity sheets consisting of alphabets, numbers and colouring fun.

The markers come in a set of eight bold and vibrant colours for toddlers to identify the different primary colours. Love that they are ergonomically designed for the little hands. What’s good to also know is that these markers are certified non-toxic and safe for use on little one’s hands and skin. She got some of the ink transferred on her little fingers when she was enthusiastic about

The Bub has not fully mastered the grip of holding a pencil/ crayon tightly so to interest her in writing (which will come next in her developmental milestone), these ergonomically designed markers set the stage to allow her to recognise the letter/ number as well as the association with the alphabet.

We turn the dabbing of the dots into a little game where I would dot a circle with a marker and the Bub dot another circle with the same marker or another marker of her choice. We dab the dot “gently” and it would leave a light mark or with a “loud thud” on the paper where a splatter of colour would show up on the paper. We turn the dabbing of dots into a fun game where I try my best to introduce other adjectives into her vocabulary. Most of the time, we managed to complete one activity sheet before the Bub flips the rest of the book to choose another letter. Her attention span is still very short. I wonder what other activities I can do at home to get her to stay still longer. Any advice?

Ada also sent over their latest item under Fiddle & Doodle which is the Match and Learn Self Correcting Puzzles. It was timely for the Bub showed a sudden interest in doing puzzles. To be honest, I was worried when some of our friend’s kids of her age could already do up an entire puzzle (between 24 – 48 pieces) on their own. We have a couple of puzzles that we received as gifts and that I had bulk-purchased but she wasn’t interested in sitting down to complete a puzzle on her own. One day when I came into our room and saw the Bub sitting down with the Man doing a puzzle, I was kind of surprised. The Man later told me that his little girl actually helped with putting the puzzle together and could even identify which pieces to stick together with some help from the father. I was surprised to learn this.

The Match and Learn Self Correcting Puzzles are designed to help pre-schoolers in alphabet recognition. Each set of puzzle card features an uppercase alphabet, a pic of an object that begins with the alphabet and the lowercase of the alphabet. The set also comes with six sets of blank jigsaw cards and over 45 stickers for Bub to personalise her alphabet learning journey. I’m keeping the stickers away from her for now as I prefer to focus one thing at a time if I can help it.

As to how we put the puzzle cards together? I basically poured out the contents of the puzzles from the box, jumbled them up and picked up a picture card first to show the Bub. Once she identified the object, I will tell her what letter the object is spelt with and we will attempt to find the letter.

The Bub is able to recognise majority of the letters in the alphabet but it is quite challenging for her to rummage through the puzzles to look for the particular alphabet so I do help her along.

Thanks Fiddle & Doodle for sending these items to us. As a Mom who is often on the look-out for toys that incorporate education and play, these items are just the right tools to do that. Grateful that the Bub actually spent 40 minutes playing with the dabber dots on the activity sheets as well as some of the puzzles and that to me is quality time well-spent.
