Our term at Sparkanauts

[Sponsored review with a give-away below!]

How quickly 10 weeks have flown by and just like that, our term with Sparkanauts has ended. It’s true what they said, time does fly by when you are having fun. And fun was what we had with the teachers at Sparkanauts.

It was kinda amazing that we could track Bubba’s development at Sparkanauts too! When Bubba first started at Sparkanauts, she was about 13 months. I was eager for her to be at the Cadet class (13 months – 18 months). But the folks at Sparkanauts thought otherwise. They wanted her to be at the Baby Cadet class (5 months – 12 months) first and looking back, I think it was a good choice not to throw her into the deep end of the ocean.

Here’s a quick re-cap of what went on during the 10-weeks that Bubba had at Sparkanauts:

IMG_2705First day of school and look how happy the Bub was! I guess she needed the time to get used to the flow of the class and because we haven’t quite exposed her to a class where there is a good mix of physical activities as well as mental stimulation games, we realised that she needed to slowly get accustomed to the flow of the session before enjoying them.

IMG_2741The first few sessions at Baby Cadet class was actually quite nerve-wrecking because Bubba couldn’t sit still and pay attention to what her teachers were doing. Her inquisitive streak meant that she would be contented running around checking out the boxes or the play-tent instead of looking at the flash-cards.

IMG_5380

IMG_2748But by week 3 of the class, we noticed that she did make some improvement. She could take simple instructions from her teachers such as giving those flash-cards a ‘hi-five’ when the teacher had completed the sequence. During the gym circuit segment, we noticed that her confidence slowly grew as she attempted to complete those obstacle courses on her own (usually with the help of coaxing her to move forward with a toy).

IMG_3538Somewhere going through one-quarter of the semester, teacher Rachel decided to promote Bubba to Cadet class. Whee! A promotion!

With the Cadet class, again, it took a while for Bubba to get used to a new set of activities that accompanied the class. As the class that she attended had a relatively small crowd, so it was quite nice that the teachers could pay a little more attention to Bubba.

IMG_4723What we really liked about the classes at Sparkanauts that it’s parent-accompanied and that emphasis is placed upon the parents to use the time during the lesson to bond with the child. I think that’s great because having both the parents in the class help break the monotony and really the burden of one parent caring fully for an over-active toddler for 60 minutes. That said, it’s not like it’s not been done before, but I really appreciate the Man being there to do the heavy-lifting (literally) when it was time for Bubba’s physical activities. Plus Bubba loves running all over the place (the Man always says she has the attention span of an ant), so it really helps when the Man is off to chase her.

Just before our term ended with Sparkanauts, Bubba enjoyed another promotion to the Junior Pilot (1 – 2 years) class.

L1030022Look at this little bright-eyed girl all ready to start her class and diving straight into the action. Timing was about right to be in this stage of the class as well. At about 15 months, Bubba has shown increased signs of wanting to learn more.

L1030054According to the Sparkanauts, the child’s brain’s language sectors develop more synapses and become more interconnected. Their eyesight also improves, as they begin to recognise shapes and categorise objects through their characteristics. Your child is taking their first steps and is beginning to take control of their body as they take steps to explore their surroundings in an upright position.

L1030028 L1030025I was actually quite impressed that by now Bubba is able to sit still during the flash cards segment. She will usually gamely give a hi-five to the teacher once the teacher completes the sequence.
L1030029

Curriculum for Junior Pilot programme if you are keen to find out more:

  • Introduction to a wide range of adjectives and nouns, songs, rhymes and rhythms based on a theme on a weekly basis. Intellectual activities that inspire children to speak and communicate.
  • Scientific based physical activities to strengthen the vestibular system. A strong vestibular system will help a child to focus and pay attention.
  • Proven activities to strengthen child’s muscle tone and postural control abilities. A good control over posture and muscles frees the brain’s capacity to comprehend higher-order thinking activities.
  • Physical activities that develops a child’s speech abilities.

[Information taken from Sparkanauts]

L1030048Bubba also really enjoyed the circuit portion of the class. This is her fave new toy, the bouncer which she will happily bounce on it and not want to move on to the next part of the circuit. We had to coax her to move on with the promise that she could play with it afterwards.

L1030061The handle bar segment can come across as being quite challenging for Bubba. We’ve been told that Bubba’s core muscles are slightly weak which is why when she hangs from the bars, her legs tend to ride up. The teachers have shared some tips on how we can build up her core muscles, so that’s what we’ve been doing at home (when we can remember).

L1030073It’s easy to go on and on about the programmes offered at Sparkanauts, so let me do a quick summary of what we really like about the classes:

  • Allows for parent-child bonding. You may think its cliche but having that 75 minutes with Bubba has become a weekly activity that we look forward to doing. Sure there are other things that we can possibly do with Bubba, but having the structured programme helps us keep track of her development. Kids learn and grow so quickly and she usually would run away during the parachute segment but at her last lesson, she actually held the handles and started grooving to the beat.
  • The class is structured so that there’s an equal mix of physical activities coupled with mental stimulation games. I really do enjoy the mystery box segment and evidently so does Bubba too as she would be among the first few to tap vigorously at the box when it comes out and the accompanying music is played. Every week, a different activity of sorts is hidden in the box. It was all about art one week, so inside our mystery box, we had pegs with materials of different textures for tactile stimulation. We even got to bring home one of these pegs to act as a paintbrush should we choose to do so after the class is over.
  • The teachers are really dedicated and encouraging. We love how cosy the group is at Sparkanauts. The teachers show a keen interest in Bubba’s development and would encourage her to go forward when all she want to do is to pout.

QuickGrab Fragranced Disposal Bags + Giveaway!

[Sponsored Review]

Heading out with Bubba can be quite a logistical feat – making sure she has enough diapers to last the outing (checked), wet wipes (checked), a set of extra clothes (checked), bib (checked), water bottle (checked) – ok, shan’t bore you further. Despite prepping all of this, we have been faced in a situation where Bubba decides to take a huge dump and after changing her dirty diaper, we are left with nowhere to dump the dirty diaper. Eeew…

Thankfully, when that happened, my cousin whipped out this poo bag device that was meant for dogs and dispensed a plastic bag for me to place the dirty diaper. I was impressed with the device and subsequently got one on my own for those emergency situations.

So when Sue-Ann contacted me to ask if I would be keen to review the QuickGrab Fragranced Diaper Disposal Bags. I thought why not? I honestly found it a struggle to get nice ones in Singapore and relying on doggy poo bags wasn’t the long term solution. In fact, when we were in Perth, I found some fragranced nappy disposal bags and grabbed one back home.

IMG_9540One of the loveliest sponsored kits I’ve received! 🙂 These fun QuickGrab Fragranced Nappy Disposal Bags and Dog Litter Disposable Bags came with a sweet treat. It was a good perk-me-up for the crazy work week that I’ve been having.

IMG_9545Thanks Sue-Ann for these yummy cupcakes! It was indeed very thoughtful! 🙂

IMG_9681Now, lookie what we have.. a typical emergency situation where we had to change Bubba’s soiled diaper outside. Thank goodness for this nifty Diaper Changing station that house all our diapering essentials and we always have a spare diaper disposal bag that we tuck inside the zipper compartment. This one was an extra one that my cousin got from the mall. Yup, branded for the whole world to see!

IMG_9946I couldn’t wait to try out the QuickGrab Fragrance Nappy Disposable Bags that we have been gifted with so I took the pack out to examine the contents. Okay, a point to note – the packaging came with a perforated corner for quick access to the bags. But guess what this smart aleck decide to do? I went to cut the top of the bag instead. Argh! When I saw the perforated corner, I was like …. Oh well, nothing that a good tape couldn’t fix. So I sealed the top and used the packaging the proper way. Haha.. Thought I share this boo-boo in case you get too eager like moi and end up whipping your scissors to cut the packaging instead.

IMG_0224Ta-dah! Ms Fix-it with the fragranced nappy disposal bags that are now so much easier to retrieve.

IMG_9948IMG_9947Remember I shared that I managed to get another brand of fragranced disposal bags? Well, I decided to do a little comparison with the QuickGrab ones that I received. I most certainly prefer the QuickGrab ones for sure. Here’s why:

IMG_0158Firstly, the QuickGrab Fragranced Nappy Disposal Bag is large enough to hold soiled nappies, wet wipes and tissues. The easy-tie handles help to seal off the germs. Next, I love that the bags are scented with a light powder scent that helps to neutralise any unpleasant odours. Lastly, one most important aesthetic feature I really like about the product is that the black colour of the bag can cleverly disguise its contents.

IMG_0120See what I mean.. Sadly, this peach one can’t disguise the content of a soiled diaper. So, I’m leaving this for home use. Why is there a need to use them at home? Well, soiled diapers really do stink up the bin! So when Bubba takes a huge dump, we prefer to put her soiled diaper in these fragranced bags which seal up the unpleasant smells. That way, we don’t have to do a major change of our common household bin.

IMG_0435These are Bubba’s diapering essentials. Fragranced nappy bag is now a-must especially to contain Bubba’s soiled diaper!

IMG_0439I love the cute packaging of the QuickGrab Fragranced Nappy Disposal Bags and it’s actually pretty compact. But I don’t really want to bring along another item into my seemingly heavy diaper bag, so I usually take out a couple of pieces of these bags and stuffed them into my diaper changing station. Did I also share that despite the slightly thinner material of these diaper bags, they are naturally degradable making it an environment-friendly way of disposing your child’s soiled diapers. I now tuck a couple of these bags into my diaper-changing pack as well as the car for those emergency situations.

IMG_0441

On top of serving the purpose of disposing soiled nappies, we also found it useful to whip them out in restaurants where Bubba goes through a whole pile of wet wipes just for a meal. Instead of just leaving a trail of wipes and mess for the restaurant staff to clear, we found the bags useful to store her trash neatly. IMG_0662

QuickGrab Fragranced Nappy Disposable Bags are currently retailing at S$4.50 over at Vaby and Kulily. For a bag of 125 pieces, I think it’s pretty value-for-money for something that you will most certainly use when out with your baby.

IMG_9933Along with the QuickGrab Fragranced Nappy Disposable Bags, Sue-Ann also added a pack of QuickGrab Fragranced Dog Litter Bags for Sparky. How lucky is the fur-kid?!

Sparky goes for his walks twice a day and every time, we walk him, we make sure that we bring at least 2-3 bags to pick up his poo. Well, we ever brought one bag only and have been faced in a situation where he suddenly decides to take another dump minutes after he finished his first. One of us had to scramble home to get another bag to clean his poo. So now, we take more bags along for his walk. Side-note: dog-owners, please be responsible and clean up after your dog takes a dump.

Doggy bags are not new on the market, but I think the QuickGrab doggy bags are. I love that the bags are scented to neutralise unpleasant smells and you know how smelly doggy poo can be. I simply use the bag like a glove to pick up Sparky’s poo and then tie the handles together tightly to seal off any germs. The dark colour conceal its yucky contents and keeps the litter out of sight until I get to the bin to dispose of the item. I really think that they are the most convenient, hygienic and economical way of disposing dog litter outside.

IMG_0658

We get complimentary doggy poo bags over at Pet Lovers but they don’t do the job as well as these QuickGrab doggy bags because the handles on these bags really do serve a functional purpose. So if you wanna grab your QuickGrab Fragrance Dog Litter Disposable Bags, you can find out more where they are going to be stocked over here.

Sophie’s Star Buys: Zwitsal Baby Hair Lotion + Giveaway!

Now that Bubba is almost inching to 10 months, I think we have a couple of faves that she is sticking by for her toiletries. Being a first-time Mom, I was honestly quite clueless about the brands of toiletries available for young ones out there. Thank goodness, recommendations from friends helped. But nothing like testing the toiletries for yourself.

IMG_6508I still recall vividly when I was in the delivery ward, during the delivery process, the first thing the Man exclaimed was ‘She has a lot of hair!’. So Bubba wasn’t one of those bare-headed babies and has been blessed with lovely hair upon birth.

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 presetSomewhere between her third and fourth month, I started to notice that her hair seemed to be thinning and she seemed to be dropping her baby hair which I heard is pretty normal.

IMG_7296That’s when we decided she was due for a simple hair-cut to see if that could help to promote hair growth. You know what the old folks believe.. if you shave off the babies hair, it will promote hair growth and on top of that, the hair grown thereafter will be thicker and fuller than before.

IMG_8747Well, as you can see, we couldn’t bear to. So we simply waited out and let her hair grow. But I noticed that hair growth was a little slower than before and it didn’t grow as thick.

Around this time, my Mom passed me more bottles of Zwitsal hair lotion. She told me to apply it on Bubba’s hair liberally as it not only made her hair smell nice but it would also help with the hair growth. She swears by the product because we (ie: my youngest sister and nephews) basically grew up with the Zwistal brand. I didn’t think too much of the hair lotion and just put it aside. Until one day, I passed a small bottle on to a Mama friend as a gift for her little one. At one of the play-dates, I noticed that said friend’s little one’s hair was a lot thicker and fuller than before and I asked my friend if it was the result of shaving her little one’s hair. To which she answered, possibly. She also shared that the Zwitsal hair lotion which I passed her could also helped with the hair growth.

I was surprised at the hair growth possibilities that the Zwistal hair lotion could have, for I always thought of it as just making my baby’s hair smell nice. I don’t really need that if it’s for cosmetic purposes but the promise of hair growth? Now, that is something I definitely don’t mind trying out.

IMG_1632So I dug out my stash of Zwistal hair lotion and started to apply it religiously on Bubba’s head after her morning shower. A couple of weeks later, I noticed that her hair was slightly thicker than before.

IMG_4648I concentrated the lotion on the top of her head and hair growth was fuller. Then I noticed the bottom part of her head was kinda balding so I now put the lotion over at the side as well. Let’s see what happens.

Giveaway : A Pair of FREE tickets to Pigeon Breastfeeding Seminar

[For new posts.. please scroll down]

When I first went back to work, I struggled with breastfeeding. I was constantly looking at the clock, rushing off to the Mother’s room to pump, rushing through lunch, getting work done and then running in and out of the Mother’s room to ensure that I keep up with my pumping duties. It was madness and I watched in dismay as supply dipped for a while.  But I’m determined to keep this breastfeeding journey going. I’ve done 6 months of exclusively breastfeeding Bubba and my next milestone would be to hit 12 months of breastfeeding.

It’s not going to be an easy journey especially being a full-time working mom and different pressures that I face with can affect the supply. At a recent event that I attended organised by PIGEON, I met with other like-minded mom bloggers who echoed their thoughts on breastfeeding and some of the challenges that they faced. It was nice to know that I’m not alone in this all and to receive some advice.

In support of moms’ breastfeeding journey, PIGEON will be conducting a breastfeeding seminar, in collaboration with Thomson Medical Centre on Saturday, 31 January 2015. Following the launch of their new range of breast pumps (see my review here), they would like to share some tips to help mothers sustain breastfeeding even after returning to work. If you are a new mom, working mom or returning mom to the workforce after delivery, I would recommend that you attend this seminar and get all the tips you need from the experts.

PIGEON has very kindly given me a pair of tickets to this seminar to give away to 1 lucky reader. These tickets are worth S$15 each and includes a buffet lunch at the Intercontinental Hotel and a goodie bag worth S$60!

Now, to win this pair of tickets, all you need to do is to leave a comment! This giveaway is only open to readers in Singapore and will close on Monday, 26 January, 21:00. The winner will be selected via random.org and results will be announced by Wednesday, 28  January. Good luck! Contest is now closed.
