Bubba meets Barney ‘live’!

[Media Invite]

My mom – she used to be a mall show junkie. I remembered when my sister was younger, she would religiously check out the different schedules at the malls for ‘live’ shows – then it was Mickey Mouse, Hi-Five, Barney, etc, and would bring my sister down for these performances. She did this for Nephew no 1 when he was in the Hi-Five cum Thomas the Train phase but that didn’t last very long I think. Now with Bubba, she was really excited to start chasing these shows at the different malls. I wasn’t quite sure about it as I didn’t know if she would be able to sit still.

IMG_2642We had received media invitations to similar shows at malls previously but had turned it down as I didn’t think Bubba would be too keen on the characters and to be honest, because she was much younger than, I didn’t think she would understand what was going on. But when we recently received this invite to check out Barney’s Beach Party happening at City Square Mall, I didn’t want to turn it down. Timing was just about right and even though we don’t expose Bubba to Barney the Purple Dinosaur, we were amazed when she pointed Barney out to us when we were at the bookstore one day.

Back by popular demand, everyone’s favourite purple dinosaur Barney is back for its fourth musical celebration at City Square Mall from 4 – 19 June 2016. Performances are at 2pm and 7pm from Tues to Fri and 1pm, 4pm and 7pm on Sat and Sun.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Man and I aren’t big on crowds, in fact we often try to avoid crowded places because we can’t deal with people pushing us. Live performances at malls aren’t quite our thing for it’s going to be crowded but I guess as parents and for the sake of Bub, we braved this mall show.

Here are some tips that I thought of sharing if you are thinking of bringing a 2 year old toddler for such similar shows:

  • Don’t arrive just on time for the performance. Most parents with their kids would already start reserving their seats in front of the stage either 1 hour or 30 minutes ahead of the performance. Our show started at 7pm sharp and we found a nice spot at the side of the stage with a front view when we were there at about 6.25pm.
  • Bring loads of snacks to keep your young toddler occupied while waiting for the show to start. I had packed some blueberries and a packet of biscuits stashed somewhere in the bag that kept Bubba’s mouth munching for a good 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Dress comfortably as you would be sitting down on the floor with your little one so wearing a dress or a short skirt with heels may not be the best idea.

Of course when the show started and the famed purple dinosaur – Barney – made its appearance on stage, Bubba was thrilled to bits. She stood up and danced to the theme song of Barney as well as ‘If you are happy.. “. The wide grin on her face was well worth to banish those thoughts that we secretly had on whether doing this was  worth her while or will she even understand what’s going on. I guess it did!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI am only acquainted with Barney the purple dinosaur but I guess I learned a thing or two about the other characters in the show. Like I didn’t even know who was BJ or Baby Bop but to my surprise, Bubba could tell us Bop Bop when she saw the poster from afar. I still wonder where she gets this from since we hardly expose her to Barney at home.

That said, it was good fun for the entire family too! The duration of the show wasn’t too long, 15 minutes so just nice to keep the little ones occupied sufficiently before they lose their attention. Good for the parents too because I was getting trampled upon by the Bub who fleeted like a butterfly from one parent to the next.

And to end of our first mall show, we had a Meet & Greet pass that allowed us to take a family picture with the adorable dinosaur and his friends. Shoppers can redeem this Meet and Greet pass 1 hour prior to each show with S$50 spent at City Square Mall. Hurry though as only 50 passes are given out per show.

IMG_2678Thank you City Square Mall and its organisers for this invitation! It was good fun before ending our evening with a lovely dinner at Waruku.

Note: An invitation to this event was kindly extended by City Square Mall. No monetary compensation was received. All opinions expressed are purely of my own.
