Checkin’ out: The Big Sheila

After reading this post by the Imp and reading her tweet about the baked cheesecake with Tim Tam crust and chocci top, I’ve been wanting to check out The Big Sheila.  I wasn’t too sure of the location but knew that it was close to the home.  While taking a different route to walk Sparky, I chanced upon The Big Sheila and excitedly told the Man, ‘This is THE place that I’ve been wanting to go!’

It was a 3-5 minutes walk from our place.  Now, that’s pretty near right?

IMG_8327Apparently The Big Sheila started out as an online gourmet western home-styled food store that expanded to a quaint and cosy cafe for the Easterners in the hood.  The decor is simple with the gorgeous food that served as the backdrop as one enters the store.

It was a sweltering hot afternoon and we would have loved to sit indoors and sip our Mimosas to escape from the heat.  But the restaurant was fully booked, so we had to settle for the outdoor seats.  Thankfully, there were fans and the servers were really nice to make sure that our ice water was always filled up when we ran low.

IMG_8319It was nearing lunch so we decided to skip brunch altogether and ordered the mains.  The Man ordered the Spiced Fish & Chips (S$29) which was done really well.  A little pricier than your usual fish & chips but the quality of fish was really good.  They had snapper used for this that day.  The chips were crispy and when dunked with the home-made tartar sauce, it was simply yummy.

IMG_8320I went with our server’s recommendation of Home-made baked beans with yummy bits (S$22).  The baked beans were made in special tomato sauce created by TBS but what I really liked about this dish was that they spared no expense in the yummy bits – cripsy bacon, sausages and pork belly.

Stuffed from our mains, I wish we had room for dessert for the cakes displayed all looked really, really good!  Well, I guess this means we just have to make another trip down to TBS another day to check out the rest of their menu.  How is it that they opened like in 2011 and we never got round to checking it out!

I guess better late than never.  We also hear that they are going to open up a bar on the 2nd level soon and honestly, we can’t wait for that to happen!  Happy to have found this new place to hangout in the hood!  🙂
